The Drunkard Analyze Thematic elements, including Symbolism, Irony, Setting, Character, Point of View and Theme: What details are we given by author? Are impressions and descriptions from narrator more illuminating of that character or his father? Is his tone or manner significant? How are we supposed to view the situation? Can we trust him to be honest? How would this story be different if told from Third Person or from another character’s Point of View? Discuss use of irony. Does it alter the reader’s perception of events and characters? Describe Characters’ characteristics. Use detail. Keep in mind all impressions one gets from a character’s description, actions, words and feelings. What conclusions are we are supposed to draw? Why is the setting, both time and place, significant? How are we supposed to view these characters? In what setting would their actions and attitudes be out of place? Why? Analyze Meaning: Is there more than one message from this story? Is there more than one audience? Who learned what about whom? Be prepared to elaborate. What other factors should we consider? Who was the drunkard? There is more than one answer.
