101
hey now..still loading. we will start shortly
7:04 PM
hey there Daniela, we will get started.
7:14 PM
Did you go through the introductory information for the class?
7:15 PM

Daniela
7:15 PM
hello
i did
7:15 PM

tichure
7:15 PM
Excellent. Do you have any specific questions about what you
observed Or read
7:15 PM

Daniela
7:17 PM
to be honest I am a little overwhelmed

tichure
7:17 PM
well, then let's have a conversation.
Let's start with the basics
7:17 PM

Daniela
7:18 PM
for the jornal, can we write anything we want?

tichure
7:18 PM
yes
but within the context of discussing things you've read or think you might use for writing
7:18 PM
in this class.
7:18 PM
You're not using it for your math notes or for your history class.
7:18 PM
But you might write yourself some notes after you read the Stephen King article or after you read a poem by Dudley Randall.
7:18 PM

Daniela
7:20 PM
oh ok

tichure
7:21 PM
fill up 60 pages in a 9 x 5 book by the end of the semester and drop it off by my office
lets talk about responses for English 101
7:21 PM

Daniela
7:21 PM
I was wondering if we could write thisg that happended to the day in addition of ideas for essays

tichure
7:22 PM
Absolutely. In fact, when I ask you for your own experience on things, these day-to-day experiences may be useful and helpful. That's why I said in the video that you might fill it in when you're on a break from work or in between classes. from your understanding, how many responses are you supposed to do by the end of the semester.

Daniela
7:23 PM
11
plus the weekly essays for 101S
7:24 PM

tichure
7:24 PM
actually, no. You need five completed responses by the end of the semester. I give you multiple opportunities to get to five, but you only need five responses.
These are the three paragraph essays that will respond to the primary sources, such as Kings article or maybe a poem by Randall or maybe a story by a Edgar Allen Poe.
7:24 PM
The reason I give you multiple opportunities to get those done is sometimes, even after the second try, there's a problem with either formatting or content or grammar and we have to move onto the next one.
7:25 PM
These responses are identified because they are called RESPONSE in the modules each week.
7:25 PM
Is that clear?
7:25 PM
In other words, if you were to do the first five RESPONSE opportunities and I marked every single one of them as COMPLETE, you would not have to do another response to the rest of the semester.
7:25 PM
Likewise, if you did all 11 RESPONSES and none of them were marked as COMPLETE for one reason or another, you would have zero credit for RESPONSES in your gradebook.
7:26 PM
Do you see how that works?
7:26 PM

Daniela
7:26 PM
yes

tichure
7:27 PM
Let's talk about tests.
as far as you know, how many tests do we take during the semester?
7:27 PM

Daniela
7:27 PM
will we have a chance to do revisions and resubmit to be marked as complete?

tichure
7:28 PM
yes once for every work other than the final paper or for the test.
So how many tests do we take?
7:28 PM

Daniela
7:29 PM
1

tichure
7:29 PM
Very good. Where is this test taken?

Daniela
7:30 PM
campus

tichure
7:31 PM
Very good Daniela
now let's talk about papers
7:31 PM
what is the first paper assignment?
7:31 PM

Daniela
7:32 PM
why I love/hate reading

tichure
7:32 PM
And you know what is required in that discussion?

Daniela
7:33 PM
no

tichure
7:33 PM
if the answer is no, tell me and I'll explain it to you
very good
7:33 PM
what you're going to write for me is likely a short three paragraph essay in which you explain to me why you either like or dislike reading
7:33 PM

Daniela
7:33 PM
thank you

tichure
7:33 PM
. As part of this, you're going to write an anecdote for me.
An anecdote is a short narrative from you that explains an experience that you personally had that has some kind of overall point.
7:34 PM
In this case, you're going to tell me a story about something that happened to you, and experience that you had, that led you to either like or dislike reading.
7:34 PM
For many students, that would be being forced to read something that was incredibly boring or being exposed to a work that was incredibly interesting that ultimately formed their overall opinion about reading as a pastime or task.
7:34 PM
You need to get to the point.
7:34 PM
I do not want generalizations about what everybody should do or should not do. This is about YOU.
7:34 PM
Any reference you make is going to be about you and your own personal opinion.
7:35 PM

Daniela
7:35 PM
ok
that helps
7:36 PM

tichure
7:38 PM
the other thing is that I want you to have read the Stephen King article and the David Long article and to use at least one quotation In the body paragraph asevidence either in support of or in contrast to what you feel about reading

Daniela
7:40 PM
ok
i have another question
7:40 PM

tichure
7:41 PM
oh please jumping any time
jump in any time.
7:41 PM
Just let me finish this though. I expect this paper to be about 1 to 2 pages
7:41 PM
it should be no more than two
7:41 PM
it should be no more than four paragraphs and the only reason you would give me four paragraphs is that your answer is not that you love or hate reading, but that you love AND hate reading and one body paragraph will be about the love and one body paragraph will be about the hate. Obviously the other two paragraphs are introduction and conclusion.
7:42 PM
It should be at least a page or close to it. Anything less than that is too short.
7:42 PM
Introductions should be about two or three sentences with no detail other than to give me the overall point
7:42 PM
conclusion should restate the overall point from the introduction but again be only two or three sentences.
7:42 PM
In neither the introduction or conclusion should you give me a list of reasons for anything. You simply give me the overall point.
7:42 PM
The body paragraph has all the specifics, all the details and, in this class, any quotation.
7:42 PM
Why you love or hate reading be in the body paragraph.
7:42 PM
That you simply love or hate reading in general will be identified in the introduction and the conclusion.
7:43 PM
The details: the body paragraph.
7:43 PM

Daniela
7:44 PM
noted

tichure
7:46 PM
So go ahead and ask your question please

Daniela
7:50 PM
for the explanation essay for 101S, do i have to use an author for support and add a quotation?

tichure
7:52 PM
let's talk about the 101S material

Daniela
7:52 PM
ok

tichure
7:53 PM
for the most part, unless I ask you to do specific research, you do not have to have a particular quotation in those essays. These are also, unless I tell you different, three paragraph essays in which you are demonstrating an argument, whether it's to tell me how a particular process will yield something or to tell me the difference between one item and another, or to explained to me something in terms of your belief or observation.
The 101S material is designed to simply get you to practice writing, in the same way that the Journal does
7:53 PM
the content has a certain formulaic aspect to it, but mostly it's about practicing your grammar and your structure and your ability to articulate yourself in a reasonable and organized way.
7:54 PM
Much of what I'm having you write about in the 101S is a reflection or coincides with what you're doing in the 101 class itself
7:56 PM
although there are specific readings or things to observe and watch as examples of the type of essay I'm asking you to read
7:56 PM
for the purposes of that class, how many total essays must you complete for a passing grade?
7:56 PM
101s?
7:56 PM

Daniela
7:57 PM
6

tichure
7:58 PM
Exactly
and again, like the RESPONSES from one-on-one, you have more than six opportunities to get these done.
7:58 PM
Like the responses, you'll get at least one opportunity to revise that work, and if it does not pass, we move onto the next work until you get a total of six done.
7:59 PM

Daniela
7:59 PM
ok

tichure
7:59 PM
Also, is there any assignment that applies to both 101 and 101S?

Daniela
8:00 PM
yes
the research paper outline
8:00 PM

tichure
8:01 PM
Very good.
You have all of the elements very clear
8:01 PM
now, do you have any questions
8:01 PM
or is there any way that I can help reduce your confusion or sense of being overwhelmed?
8:01 PM

Daniela
8:02 PM
you already helped
I appretiate it
8:02 PM

tichure
8:04 PM
no problem. Have you started doing the reading? Have you read the work by Mr. Wong?

Daniela
8:04 PM
me going deciding to go back to school and English being my second language makes me a little nervous
yes
8:04 PM

tichure
8:04 PM
It's all about practice Daniela
that's why I give you so much to read and so much to write.
8:04 PM
That's why you're in a classroom.
8:04 PM
If you knew all this stuff, you don't need the class.
8:05 PM
A guy who has an engineering degree does not take a freshman or sophomore engineering course.
8:05 PM

Daniela
8:05 PM
right

tichure
8:05 PM
Likewise, when you take your American history class, your teacher does not assume you already know everything. That's why he or she will lecture, make you read stuff and make you watch videos and the like.
Therefore, go with the process. Understand that I'm giving you material in a very particular order in order for you to build upon what you already know and to fine-tune your writing style and your analytical abilities so that by the end of the semester, you have the tools you need to move on to English 103
8:05 PM

Daniela
8:07 PM
thank you

tichure
8:07 PM
no problem.
Is there anything else I can help you with
8:07 PM

Daniela
8:07 PM
I think that is it for now

tichure
8:08 PM
well do the readings for week one and two and we can talk about the material for it for next week.
Likewise, begin your essay discussing how much you enjoy or dislike reading
8:08 PM
and make sure you look at my examples of what introductions and conclusions look like
8:08 PM
to help structure your essay.
8:08 PM

Daniela
8:08 PM
will do
last quick question
8:11 PM

tichure
8:11 PM
of course

Daniela
8:11 PM
can I add my notes from the chat to my journal?

tichure
8:12 PM
Of course
anything having to do with this class is fair game for the Journal
8:12 PM
free writing and developing ideas for papers you don't have to do are good for the Journal
8:13 PM

Daniela
8:14 PM
awesome
thank you again
8:14 PM

tichure
8:15 PM
you're welcome. Do the reading and we can talk about the material itself next week.
Perhaps there will be a few more people. But I'm here every week from 7 to 9 on Wednesday.
8:15 PM
I will help you with whatever you're working on.
8:15 PM

Daniela
8:19 PM
OK. Will talk next week.

tichure
8:21 PM
Take care Daniela.
I'll be around until 9 o'clock if something else pops up. Otherwise see you next week.
8:21 PM
